Abstract This work presents a methodology for extracting the violin body impulse response by means of deconvolution of excitation signal coming from an electric violin’s pickup and a recorded audio signal coming from an acoustic violin; both signals are generated automatically by a violin playing machine; therefore, we obtained more acoustic-like sounds coming from the electric instruments. By reviewing the available literature we compared the different approaches to obtain the desired impulse response and determined the specifications for the machine. We provide a detailed description of a prototype for the bowing machine and the physical constraints and limitations in the construction. We also performed a user survey consisting of musically trained and untrained subjects to obtain quantitative information regarding the subjective quality of the obtained sound and to observe if the listeners are able to label the obtained sound as an acoustic instrument.
