Seminar by Bruno Zamborlin on Gesture interaction

05.10.2011

On Monday October 10th at 12.00h in room 55.410 Bruno Zamborlin, PhD student in Arts and Computational Technologies, will give a talk on "Gesture interaction design and expressive control of digital media".

ABSTRACT
During the last three years, we studied various methods for computer-based gesture analysis, with the general goal of using body movements to interact with sound and visual media. We realised a system called Gesture Follower that allows for recognition and synchronisation of gestures with digital media.
This research has largely been influenced by sustained collaborations with musicians/composers and dancers/choreographers. I will present the technology and some of these works, including recent collaborations with the composer Lorenzo Pagliei and the violinist Mari Kimura.
Recently, I focused on the usability of these tools. I will present a brand new application called Gesture Interaction Design (GIDE), whose main purpose is to guide the artist in the creation and design of his own gesture vocabulary.
I will also introduce an application of this technology for gesture-driven audio/video mosaicing.

BIO
Bruno Zamborlin is currently doing a joint PhD student in Arts and Computational Technologies between the Goldsmiths Digital Studio, Univ. of London, and the Real-Time Musical Interactions team at IRCAM, Paris.
He previously worked at IRCAM for the last four years focusing in real-time gesture recognition for performing arts.
He studied computer science at the University of Bologna and the Institute of Advanced Computer Science of Leiden and worked for two years at the Centro Tempo Reale in Florence as computer-music software developer.
He collaborated with composers such as Pierre Jodlowsky and Ivan Fedele, and performers such as Mari Kimura and Richard Siegal.
